ABSTRACT Two different techniques were used for sampling hays in South of Portugal farms. Ten bales were sample at random from each type of hay and analysed individually. At the same time sixteen bales were sampled to make a composite sample. The variance of duplicates within bales (σ2), bales within hays (σ2F) and the variance of hays (σ2E) were calculated. There was no differences (P> 0,005) between the two sampling procedures. There significant differences (P<0,001) between the individual samples taken from the bales of the same hay. According to the calculated repeatibility of bales (0,27), sixteen bales were the minimum number to get a representative sample.
