Abstract
Humans are social beings. We like to be in the company of others,
share our thoughts and feelings, plan activities together, play together,
belong somewhere, and feel wanted by others. Most people also desire
stable, long-lasting relationships, including friendships. Friendships in
childhood have an additional function: They form a good platform to
playfully practice all kinds of social skills, such as how to cooperate
with others, resolve con"icts, take turns, obtain and keep a position
in the peer group, and not be bullied or worse: forgotten or neglected
(Hodges, Boivin, Vitaro, & Bukowski, 1999).
