From textile to social fabric. An ethno-history of the ndop between Cameroon and France (19th-21st centuries) The history of Cameroon and France is a complex one, made up of relationships of domination but also of attempts at understanding. Despite the violent relations that have brought the two countries together, this history is made up of institutional links and support, networks of individuals and the circulation of objects and techniques. The ndop, the emblematic textile of the traditional chieftaincies of the Grassfields in Cameroon, is one of the elements that have helped to forge links between these two countries, despite being separated by kilometres and opposed by particularly brutal colonial and post-colonial periods. Through the cultural promotion of ndop, we will see that the history of this textile extends far beyond Cameroon. Starting with the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, we will highlight the existence of a history of ndop in France from the first half of the twentieth century. This French history of ndop is indissociable from the Cameroonian history of ndop, which fascinates, questions and animates discourse even more today than in the past. These two aspects of the history of ndop can be brought together to form a single history : a transnational history of ndop between Cameroon and France. | por |
