Envelhecimento demográfico em Portugal: seremos suficientes para cuidar dos idosos do futuro?

Abstract

Temos assistido a um aumento da longevidade e isto resulta num envelhecimento acentuado nos países desenvolvidos e Portugal não é exceção. O objetivo principal deste trabalho é avaliar o impacto da não renovação gerações no número de cuidadores informais e formais em Portugal baseado em projeções populacionais. A verdade é que se tem verificado que a estrutura populacional tem tido uma evolução sempre no mesmo caminho, isto é, mortalidade e natalidade baixa, logo, menos indivíduos na população jovem e ativa e mais indivíduos com idades acima dos 65 (aumento da esperança de vida) resultando assim, desde os últimos anos, num envelhecimento populacional que se prevê manter durante os próximos 20. Aliado a este envelhecimento, prevê-se também um aumento no número de pessoas que não se encontrarão institucionalizadas, logo é importante estimar o número de potenciais cuidadores informais. Este estudo irá, assim, alertar para a necessidade de desenvolvimento de soluções que previnam um agravamento desta situação através da quantificação resultante da criação de um cenário demográfico evolutivo que sustente as mesmas; - Abstract: Demographic aging in Portugal: will we be enough to care for the eldery of the future? We have seen an increase in longevity, and this results in accentuated aging in developed countries and Portugal is no exception. Aging is an inevitable situation, impossible to control its pace and even its occurrence. This scenario will not change, and this will influence market dynamics, such as the availability of human resources such as formal and informal caregivers for the elderly. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the impact of non-renewal generations on the number of informal and formal caregivers in Portugal based on population projections. The truth is that it has been verified that the population structure has always evolved along the same path, that is, low mortality and birth rates, therefore, fewer individuals in the young and active population and more individuals aged over 65 (increasing life expectancy) thus resulting, since the last years, in population aging that will remain a reality for the next 20, 40, 60 years. This study will thus highlight the need to develop solutions to prevent a worsening of this situation by providing quantification based on the creation of an evolving demographic scenario to support them.
