Abstract

ABSTRACT: Objectives: Map the evidence regarding the baby-led weaning method as an alternative to the traditional method in food diversification. Methods: The elaboration of this Scoping Review follows the protocol of Joanna Briggs Institute. The search was carried out in the search engines B-On and EBSCOhot web (MEDLINE with full text & CINAHL plus with full text), in which the following keywords were used: “Baby” AND “Weaning” AND “Infant Food” AND “Introduction” AND “Complementary Feeding”. The keywords were duly validated in the descriptors, Health Sciences (DeCS) and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). Results: We selected 7 articles, which correspond to the initial objective: the baby-led weaning method (BLW) as an alternative to the traditional method in food diversification. Conclusions: The practice of the BLW method has associated advantages and disadvantages, which are clearly identified by parents and professionals. Parents who practice the BLW method with their children are mostly in favor of it and identify its advantages more easily than health professionals. However, this topic needs further studies so that national and international entities can reach a consensus on its recommendation and safe practice.
