El Castelo do Mau Vizinho, Arraiolos. Documentación y revisión de un contexto de la romanización

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present the ongoing research at Castelo do Mau Vizinho site in Arraiolos, Upper Alentejo, Portugal. This site has been classi ed as a tower enclosure, a site typology used to describe forti ed places from Late Repub- lican times in South and Western Iberian Península (chie y Lower and Upper Alentejo, The Serena valley, La Carolina or the Guadalquivir river basin). Nevertheless, the construction technique and the complexity of the archaeology site could be con- sider an outlier among similar sites. Thus we took a chance to approach the site using a wide range of non-invasive techniques, as ground-penetrating radar, photogrammetry and 3D reconstruction to create a new plan of the site and its environment to discuss interpretative possibilities. Moreover, we discuss the epigraphic evidence that situates the Calanticenses ethnic group in the surroundings to highlight the agency of indigenous communities in the romanization process of Lusitania.
