A americanização do Exército Português na década de 50: uma perspetiva histórica

Abstract

Esta tese tem por objetivo investigar a influência direta americana na organização, equipamento, formação e mobilização militar do Exército português ao longo da década de 50. Os efeitos da americanização, pós 2ª Guerra Mundial, são aqui analisados num contexto cingido às relações luso-americanas relativamente à cooperação militar. O envolvimento de Portugal na NATO estimulou o país na criação de unidades de tipologia americana que provocaram a integração orgânica de especialidades inexistentes no Exército português, em resultado dos equipamentos inovadores com que foram apetrechadas e do apoio formativo de quadros no exterior fundamentalmente em escolas americanas. Como propósito político, tão almejado pelos militares, a concretização deste processo carecia da existência de efetivos nas fileiras, ou disponíveis por mobilização, para os quartéis ficarem dotados de competências individuais e coletivas, que permitissem ombrear com os parceiros da Aliança Atlântica na realização de missões de defesa para a preservação da independência do espaço europeu; ABSTRAT: THE AMERICANIZATION OF THE PORTUGUESE ARMY IN THE DECADE OF 50: A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE The present thesis aims to investigate the direct influence America had on the Portuguese Army as far as its organization, equipment, training and military mobilization are concerned throughout the 1950s. The effects of this so-called Americanization, in the post-World War II period, are analyzed herein within the strict context of the Portuguese-American relations in terms of military cooperation. The involvement of Portugal in NATO was the spur that motivated the country to the creation of units of American typology that led to the integration in its Army’s organics of a number of specialties unknown to the Portuguese military until then, as a result of both the innovative equipments with which they were equipped and the training support given to staff abroad mainly in American schools. As a political purpose and one so desired by the military, the implementation of this process lacked however the existence of troops in the ranks, or available by mobilization, so that the barracks were endowed with individual and collective competences, that allowed them to stand shoulder to shoulder with the partners of the Atlantic Alliance in the accomplishment of defense missions for the preservation of the independence of the European area.
