Familiares de la Inquisición portuguesa (siglos XVI-XVIII): los números, la demanda y los grupos sociales intermedios

Abstract

This article deals with the social composition of the Portuguese familiaturas of the Santo Ofício, looking for if they were dominated by people of intermediate groups in the long term (1536-1773). To this end, it analyzes the demand for the position and how the Holy Office tried to shape it in certain conjunctures, refining the recruitment criteria. The main sources used are prosopographic data resulting from the genealogical qualifications and the correspondence between the General Council and the district tribunals.
