Abstract

Work and family between the Iberian New-Christians: networks and artisans in South of the Iberian Peninsula Abstract The present pages analyse the artisan group of descendents of Jewish converts in the Southern Iberian Peninsula during the Modern period. The main objective has been to deepen the mechanisms used by silversmiths and weavers of this New-Christian origin in Évora and Córdoba to integrate into the rest of society. For this purpose, we considered different universes of identity that specifically characterised them and that acted at the same time: the socio-professional and institutional, concretised in the urban environment; the family and kinship ties, presenting the social and labour participation of women; and the socio-religious, with special attention to the inquisitorial world. Constant comparison, as the main methodological pillar, make possible to point out similarities and differences that exist on the basis of a common Iberian phenomenon and how each group tried to solve its difficulties in search of the same objectives, summarised in guaranteeing its family and economic survival.
