A divulgação da fotografia no Portugal oitocentista: protagonistas, práticas e redes de circulação do saber

Abstract

Ao mesmo tempo que a História e Filosofia das Ciência iniciava um movimento de renovação, a partir dos anos 70 do século passado, a historiografia da fotografia descolou da tradicional abordagem inspirada nos cânones da história de arte (modelo de Beaumont Newall), tendo surgido um conjunto de obras cujos autores já não são os cientistas do séc. XIX, pioneiros da historiografia da fotografia, nem os curadores, críticos de arte e fotógrafos dos anos 40 a 70 do século passado, mas sim historiadores, filósofos e alguns sociólogos, verificando-se a par uma reassunção da natureza científica e técnica da fotografia e um certo abandono dos discursos em torno da sua vertente artística, bem como os escudados nos contributos da semiologia, no discurso do documento, da reprodução do “isto foi”. Paralelamente, durante a última década, tem sido dada uma importância crescente à circulação e popularização da ciência e da tecnologia, quer nos centros, quer nas periferias da Europa, bem como aos estudos de caso que, historiograficamente, enriqueçam a compreensão de “particularidades” destes aspectos em países que, até agora, não tiveram visibilidade na produção científica. O aparecimento destes estudos, nomeadamente em países ou regiões periféricas aos tradicionais centros do saber, permitem aprofundar o estudo da formação e circulação dos quadros interpretativos que determinaram o uso e a prática fotográfica nos mais diversos contextos sociais, económicos e geográficos, bem como poderão abrir caminho para a entrada da fotografia e fotógrafos no âmbito da história da cultura científica e da divulgação científica. É neste enquadramento que nos propomos investigar a divulgação, o desenvolvimento e a popularização da prática fotográfica em Portugal e no caso particular do Alentejo, pequena região periférica, por sua vez, ela própria, inserida num país periférico, ao longo de todo o séc. XIX. Procuraremos efectuar uma abordagem transversal e centrada em três níveis de análise: a influência de um centro irradiador da nova descoberta (particularmente França e Inglaterra); Portugal com destaque para os grandes momentos e vultos da história fotográfica nacional oitocentista e, finalmente, o Alentejo; THE DISSEMINATION OF PHOTOGRAPHY IN PORTUGAL 18th CENTURY PROTAGONISTS, PRATICES AND KNOWLEDGE CIRCULATION NETWORKS ABSTRACT: While a movement for the renewal of the History and Philosophy of Science began in the early 1970s, the historiography of photography abandoned the traditional approach inspired by the canons of art history (based on Newall Beaumont's model), a collection of works having appeared whose authors are now not the scientists of the 19th century, the pioneers of the historiography of photography, or curators, art critics or photographers from the 1940s to the 1970s, but historians, philosophers and a small number of few sociologists, while the reassumption of the scientific and technical nature of photography is patent, as well as a certain abandonment of discourses on its artistic aspect and also those contained in semiotic works, in the discourse of the document, of the reproduction of "what was”. At the same time, during the past decade, increasing importance has been given to the spread and popularization of science and technology, both in centers of importance and regions of peripheral importance in Europe, as well as case studies, which in historiographic terms, increase our understanding of the "peculiarities" of these aspects in countries which hitherto have had little importance as far as the production of scientific literature is concerned. The appearance of these studies in countries or regions of peripheral importance as compared with traditional centers of learning, allow for the in-depth study of the training and dissemination of interpretative frameworks that determined photographic use and practice in a wide range of social, economic and geographical contexts, and could pave the way for the entry of photography and photographers to the field of the history of scientific culture and scientific dissemination. It is within this framework that we seek to investigate the dissemination, development and popularization of photographic practice in Portugal and, in particular, the Alentejo region: a small peripheral region, located in a country with a profile of peripheral importance, throughout the 19th century. We seek to adopt a transversal approach focused on three levels of analysis: the influence of a radiating center of new discovery (particularly France and Britain); Portugal, with emphasis on the great occasions and figures of 19th-century national photographic history; and the Alentejo.
