Adicionalmente, foi realizada uma análise petrográfica de amostras seleccionadas e determinada a produção de calor por unidade de volume; ABSTRACT: The effort of integrated monitoring of permafrost and active layer, under the projects PERMAMODEL e PERMANTAR, allow some portuguese spanish and swiss teams proceeded to conducting surveys to collect cores and record temperatures in the South Shetland Islands, with the aim of evaluating the effects of climate change in the region. Because its vulnerability to climate changes permafrost is considered a geoindicator of climate change. The cores used for this study were collected in five boreholes, in Hurd Peninsula, Livingston Island: CALM, Papagal, EMETEO, PG1 (Permamodel Gulbenkian 1) and PG2 (Permamodel Gulbenkian 2). To try to understand the phenomena of freezing and thawing, and the temporal and spatial evolution of temperature in the uppermost ground and to estimate the heat flow density, different thermophysical properties and physical characterization of selected cores were determined in the laboratory. Additionally, heat production determination, per unit volume and petrographic analysis of selected samples were carried out.por
