Os mármores do Alentejo. história, património e valorização cultural (1850 - 2020)

Abstract

A história e o património da indústria dos mármores da região do Alentejo (Vila Viçosa, Borba e Estremoz), é o tema desta tese, e no seu âmbito procurámos estudar e compreender as suas dinâmicas históricas e territoriais, de meados do século XIX até aos nossos dias. A importância histórica da “Zona dos Mármores” reside na sua exploração praticamente ininterrupta, e no seu reconhecimento enquanto região produtora de bons mármores. A partir do século XX, devido à grande concentração industrial que ali vai tendo lugar, torna-se não só mais importante polo de extracção a nível nacional, como também um dos mais emblemáticos centros de extracção de mármores do mundo. Com este trabalho procuramos contribuir para o conhecimento histórico desta indústria e para a uma discussão pluridisciplinar, que permita a identificação, patrimonialização e difusão das potencialidades desta região, no âmbito da cultura e do turismo, através de estratégias culturais que valorizem os seus elementos identitários; Abstract: The marbles of Alentejo, History, Heritage and cultural enhancement (1850-2020) The history and heritage of the marble industry in the Alentejo region (Vila Viçosa, Borba and Estremoz), is the topic of this thesis. Within this scope, we decided to study and understand the historical and territorial dynamics, from the middle of19th century to our days. The historical importance of the “Marble Zone” is due to its almost uninterrupted exploration, and to its recognition as a major producer of high-quality marbles. Since the 20th century, due to the great industrial concentration that took place , the region becomes the most important national center of marble extraction and one of the most emblematic marble extraction centers in the world. With this work we intend contribute to the historical knowledge of this industry, whit a multidisciplinary discussion, which allows the identification, enhancement and dissemination of the cultural and touristic potential of the region, through cultural strategies that value its identity elements.
