Abstract

= From the end of the 19th century, Portuguese nationalism built strong images of the country that built the national identity against the modern industrial civilization: one country with an agrarian vocation, hardworking and adventurous, colonizer but without any industrial nature. This essay surveys some of the environmental conflicts associated with the mining industry, forestry and industrial fishing, which emerged during this period, to question those views.
