Abstract

An interpretative proposal Abstract: The piano works of Oscar Lorenzo Fernândez (1897-1948) are rich in expression markings in their scores: agogics, articulations, dynamics, amongst others. Taking this into account, we asked about the possible relationships between such indications with the cultural references (topics) embedded in the compositions, as well as with their formal structuring, aiming at better informed interpretive decisions. For this we selected representative works of the modernist nationalist phase of the composer (1929-1947): Três Estudos em forma de Sonatina (1929), Primeira Suite Brasileira para Piano (1936) and Sonata Breve (1947). A historical, aesthetic, and biographical contextualization of the works and analysis of the scores were carried out, followed by analyzes of selected recordings, in order to better understand how experienced pianists deal with expressiveness in these works. Based on these analyses, we formulated a series of interpretive considerations, and we corroborated the hypothesis initially raised, namely, that an interpretation that meticulously follows the expressive markings of the composer leads, in general, to a better assimilation of the cultural references incorporated in the musical text. However, it also demonstrated that the different layers of expressiveness (agogic, dynamics, form and topics) sometimes allow diversified interpretations of the work.
