Abstract

Conclusão: os efeitos da prática dos dois tipos de exercício físico foram distintos em grande parte das variáveis analisadas; Abstract: Connection between the practice of hydro gimnastics, gymnasium using hydraulic circuit machinery and physical fitness and quality of life in postmenopausal women. Objective: to study the connection between post-menopause age, the physical and functional fitness and the quality of life among women who practice hydro gymnastics and gymnasium using hydraulic machinery. We also intend to understand if there are any differences in the above mentioned variables regarding the kind of the performed exercise. Methodology: our study comprised 90 female post-menopause participants. One third of those 90 women was training in an hydraulic circuit machinery, another third was practicing hydro gymnastics and the other third didn’t practice any kind of physical exercise (this one is the control group). The participants were part of physical activity programs for more than 2 years. Quality of life (evaluated through the sf-36 questionnaire) and physical and functional fitness, which include the body composition, muscular strength, cardiorespiratory ability, flexibility and agility/balance, were the assessed parameters. Results: the main differences were noticed regarding weight (kg), fat mass (% and g), IMC (kg/cm), waist perimeter (cm), body water percentage, visceral fat, quality of life, cardiorespiratory ability, flexibility and agility/balance (p<0,05). The group practising gymnasium activities using hydraulic machinery achieved better results. In the table that relates the period of time, in which the menopausal women were studied, with the variables that didn’t present significant differences, it was verified that only the 180º extension and the cumulative fatigue of the dominant arm (p<0,05) presented significant differences. Conclusion: The practice of the two types of physical exercise had distinct effects in the majority of the analysed variables.
