Abstract

In super high density olive orchards (SHD), the control of tree dimensions is crucial to get the best performance of the over the row harvesting machine and light penetration into the canopy. When there is a decrease in the yield some interventions could be made in order to recover the orchard productivity. A olive orchard established in March 2002 in Herdade do Lameirões – Safara - Moura - Portugal (38º 04’N 7º 16’W) with excessive dimensions of the trees was submitted in 2010 to a pruning rejuvenation. The orchard was planted according a randomised complete block design with three replications. The orchard was two densities and six varieties to be evaluated, leading to 36 plots with 3 lines of 20 trees per plot. The densities used are 1850 trees per hectare (4mx1.35m) and 1250 trees per hectare (4m x 2m). The varieties used are Azeiteira, Cobrançosa, Cordovil de Serpa, Galega, Redondil e Arbequina. This paper shows the yield obtained after the pruning rejuvenation in order to contribute for increasing the knowledge about the management of super high olive orchard.
