Arrastres y ataques simbólicos a esculturas

Abstract

Coincidiendo con la pandemia del Covid-19 estalló en Europa y América una oleada de ataques contra esculturas cuyo pasado revelaba colonialismo, racismo o explotación esclavista. Los ataques evidenciaban dos realidades latentes: la continuación del racismo en el mundo y la persistencia de un patrimonio cultural monumental que cuestionaba la representación de los derechos humanos. Para analizar el fenómeno, se propone, primero, una investigación histórica para registrar ataques contemporáneos contra esculturas en Europa y América. En segundo lugar, se aplica la hipótesis de que los ataques cuestionaban la legitimidad simbólica de dicho patrimonio escultural en el espacio público. En tercer lugar, se analiza la acción bárbara en contextos de democracia. El presente estudio revela la distancia que parece separar a la sociedad civil de los medios formales de representación que ofrece la democracia. ENGLISH: Overlapping with the Covid-19 pandemic, a wave of attacks busted against sculptures whose past revealed colonialism, racism or slave exploitation. The attacks evidenced two latent realities: the continuation of racism in the world and the persistence of a monumental cultural heritage that questioned the representation of human rights. Firstly, we proposed historical research on contemporary-era attacks in Europe and America to analyze the phenomenon. Secondly, to understand the process, we applied the hypothesis that the attacks questioned the symbolic legitimacy of the sculptures in public space. Thirdly, barbarian action in democratic contexts is analyzed, revealing the distance separating civil society from formal means of representation offered by democracy.
