O papel da escola como espaço de educação para a cidadania

Abstract

Face às grandes mudanças ocorridas nos últimos tempos na sociedade em que vivemos, a cidadania tem vindo a ocupar um lugar de destaque, particularmente no domínio da educação. Perante a necessidade de forma: cidadãos responsáveis, conscientes e democraticamente interventivos na vida social e comunitária, a educação para a cidadania surge atualmente como uma das prioridades do sistema educativo português. Trata-se de uma tarefa que exige a aquisição de um conjunto de conhecimentos, de competências e capacidade de intervenção, cabendo às várias instituições educativas e em particular à escola, a responsabilidade dessa tarefa. Contudo, face à inexistência de um espaço específico desta temática, assumindo um carácter transversal no currículo do primeiro ciclo do Ensino Básico, move-nos a intenção de conhecer e analisar atividades significativas e respetivas competências desenvolvidas pelos professores, nas escolas do primeiro ciclo do Agrupamento onde exercemos funções e percebermos em que medida a escola do primeiro ciclo se assume como espaço de educação para a cidadania. /ABSTRACT - Considering the considerable changes occurred during the last decades in our society, the notion of citizenship has become more and more important, particularly in the domain of the Educational Policies. Towards the necessity of educating responsible, conscious and democratically interventionist citizens in a social and communitarian society, the subject of Citizenship arises, in the present time, as one of the priorities of the Portuguese Educational System. This task leads to the acquisition of different forms of knowledge, skills and also to the ability to intervene. However, there is a lack of space to teach this kind of theme in the curricula of the Primary School. Nevertheless, the very same theme of Citizenship assumes a transversal character in the curricula of the Primary School, and therefore we are moved by the intention to know and analyse significant activities in this matter, as well as the skills developed by the teachers of the Primary School who work for the same institution as we do. We also aim to understand in how far the Primary School in fact assumes the role of a place to educate its students towards citizenship.
