À Margem: Revitalização do Património Industrial no Baixo Tejo

Abstract

Resultante do processo de industrialização, permanecem ao longo da margem do rio Tejo diversos edifícios industriais, testemunhos espaciais que consagram o fascínio da decadência e da efemeridade do período industrial. Longe de serem meros vestígios obsoletos, estes espaços encerram um forte potencial para a reinterpretação do território e a construção de novas narrativas sobre o lugar. Compreendidos entre a foz e o baixo Tejo, estes edifícios revelam-se como oportunidades para reativar uma frente ribeirinha que foi, durante séculos, eixo de ligação e de vivências comunitárias. Atualmente afastada das dinâmicas centrais, a margem do Tejo permanece como um território fértil para a reconexão entre população, paisagem e património. Enquanto ponto estratégico de sistemas fluviais e terrestres, o Carregado, assume um papel central na estruturação deste território, com especial destaque para a Vala do Carregado, onde se localiza um conjunto industrial com implantação privilegiada junto ao rio. A sua condição atual oferece a oportunidade de restabelecer o diálogo entre a vila e a margem, interrompido pela presença da infraestrutura ferroviária, através de um projeto para os edifícios industriais à margem do rio. O projeto parte da identificação de quatro desafios: - A permanência de estruturas industriais na margem; - A necessidade de requalificação da frente ribeirinha; - A procura por uma nova relação entre vila e rio; - A valorização de um espaço atualmente obsoleto. A reflexão desenvolvida ao longo deste trabalho procura compreender e integrar estes elementos, propondo um novo olhar sobre o fragmento industrial enquanto componente ativa da paisagem. A vertente prática da dissertação materializa-se num projeto para os Armazéns da Vala do Carregado, onde se explora a conservação, a reativação do espaço e a celebração da memória coletiva, contribuindo para uma aproximação renovada entre território, património e comunidade; On the Sidelines: Revitalization of Industrial Heritage in Low Tejo - Abstract: Heirs of the process of industrialization, remain along the banks of the River Tagus various industrial fragments, spatial testimonies that enshrine the fascination of the decadence and ephemerality of the industrial period. Far from being mere obsolete ruins, these spaces hold great potential for reinterpreting the territory and constructing new narratives about the place. Located between the river mouth and the lower Tagus, these buildings are opportunities to reactivate a waterfront that was, for centuries, a pivot of connection and community life. Currently cut off from the central dynamics, the banks of the Tagus remain a fertile territory for reconnecting the population, landscape and heritage. As a strategic point for river and land systems, Carregado plays a central role in structuring this territory, with special emphasis on Vala do Carregado, where an industrial warehouse is located with a privileged location next to the river. Its current condition offers the opportunity to re-establish the dialog between the town and the riverbank, interrupted by the presence of the railway infrastructure, through a project for the industrial buildings on the riverbank. The project is based on the identification of four challenges: - The permanence of industrial structures on the waterfront; - The need to redevelop the riverfront; - The search for a new relationship between town and river; - The valorization of a space that is currently obsolete. The reflection developed throughout this work seeks to understand and integrate these elements, proposing a new look at the industrial fragment as an active component of the landscape. The practical side of the dissertation takes the form of a project for the warehouses in Vala do Carregado, which explores conservation, the reactivation of space and the celebration of collective memory, contributing to a renewed rapprochement between territory, heritage and community.
