Análise do temperamento em bovinos da raça Mertolenga

Abstract

A presente dissertação teve como objetivo a avaliação do temperamento de bovinos da raça Mertolenga, através do Score de Temperamento e o Qualitative Behavioural Assessment (QBA), ambos avaliados na balança. Foram também avaliadas as interações sociais dos animais em 2 ambientes distintos: no exterior e no interior. Foi determinada a relação entre o temperamento e o ganho médio diário (GMD). No ambiente interior verificou-se maior manifestação das diferentes interações sociais, sendo as “Vocalizações”, a “Monta” e as “Marradas” as que apresentaram maior incidência. Na balança, verificou-se uma diminuição significativa do Score de Temperamento, e da Movimentação, assim como uma mudança de comportamento de “Agitado” para “Alerta”. Animais classificados como pouco ou nada temperamentais, foram os que apresentaram GMD superiores. Os resultados obtidos realçam a importância de um maneio correto e recurso a práticas de Bem-Estar Animal e a sua influência no temperamento, comportamento e GMD dos animais; TEMPERAMENT ANALYSIS OF MERTOLENGA CATTLE BREED ABSTRACT: This dissertation aimed to evaluate the temperament of Mertolenga cattle through the relation between Temperament Score and Qualitative Behavioural Assessment (QBA), both evaluated on the squeeze chute. Social interactions were also evaluated in 2 distinct environments: the exterior and interior. The relationship between temperament and the average daily gain (ADG) was also determined. There was more manifestation of the observed interactions in the interior environment, with “Vocalizations”, “Mounts” and “Nudges” showing the highest incidence. On the squeeze chute, there was a significant decrease in the Temperament Score and Movement, and a change in behaviour from “Agitated” to “Alert”. Animals considered with little, or no reactivity were those thar presented higher ADG. These results highlight the importance of correct management and the use of Animal Welfare practices and their influence on the animals’ temperament, behaviour and ADG.
