Os agentes do Serviço Musical das Catedrais de Elvas e Portalegre

Abstract

Portalegre e Elvas são, certamente, duas das dioceses menos conhecidas e estudadas, dentro do conjunto dos bispados erigidos por D. João III. O recente processo de inventariação do acervo documental de diocese da Portalegre, e de uma parte do antigo arquivo da Sé de Elvas, constituiu uma oportunidade para o estudo e caracterização dos serviços musicais de ambas as catedrais. Com o presente trabalho pretende-se dar a conhecer as estruturas musicais fundamentais, assim como os recursos utilizados em todos os momentos do ritual, sem perder de vista a sua evolução ao longo do tempo. O cerne da investigação – de natureza histórica e não propriamente musicológica - pretende revelar os protagonistas dessa actividade musical, partindo de uma análise prosopográfica, assente também em registos paroquiais e notariais. Incide nas suas dimensões sociais, económicas, laborais ou patrimoniais. O âmbito temporal definido, embora vasto, foi desafiante. Na catedral de Portalegre, a análise abrangeu todo o período compreendido desde a sua fundação em 1550 até 1881 (com ligeira extensão ao ano de 1917, data da extinção do seu coro enquanto serviço musical permanente) e no caso da catedral de Elvas tivemos em consideração os dados no período compreendido entre a fundação do bispado em 1570 e a sua integração na Arquidiocese de Évora, em 1881. Ao mesmo tempo esta investigação permitiu reunir alguma informação sobre as colegiadas de Arronches e Castelo de Vide, pertencentes à diocese de Portalegre e sobre as colegiadas de Campo Maior e Olivença, que dependiam da diocese de Elvas. Fez-se também uma primeira aproximação a estas instituições, de modo a compreender os seus elos com as catedrais em análise; ABSTRACT: The musical service officers of the cathedrals of Elvas and Portalegre Within the set of the so called dioceses created by the Portuguese King João III, Portalegre and Elvas are certainly two of the least known and studied. The inventory of the documental archieves of the diocese of Portalegre and a part of the former archives of Elvas diocese - which has taken place recently- provided the opportunity for the study and characterization of the music service of both cathedrals. With this work we intend to present the fundamental musical structures, as well as the musical resources used in every ritual moment, without losing sight of their evolution over time. However, the core of the research - of a historical rather than musicological nature - is to reveal the performers of this musical activity - starting from a prosopographic analysis, based on diversified sources, including parochial and notarial records, focused on their social, economic, labor or asset dimensions. The defined time scope, although vast, was challenging. In the case of the Cathedral of Portalegre, the analysis covered the whole period from its foundation (1550) to 1881 (with a slight extension to the year 1917, the date of the end of its choir as a permanent music service) and, in the case of the Cathedral of Elvas, we considered the data between its foundation (in 1570) and the integration in the Archdiocese of Évora in 1881. The investigation also allowed us to collect some information about the small chapels of Arronches and Castelo de Vide, depending on the diocese of Portalegre, and the music chapels of Campo Maior and Olivença, which were part of the diocese of Elvas. We also included a first approach to these institutions so that their links to the cathedrals under this study could be better understood.
