Chondrichthyes do Neogénico de Portugal

Abstract

Portugal possui um registo fóssil notável. Durante décadas, investigadores encontraram milhares de fósseis e identificaram centenas de espécies dos principais grupos taxonómicos. Este trabalho refere-se à literatura científica sobre fósseis de peixes cartilagíneos, colhidos em jazidas fossilíferas do Neogénico português. Foram encontrados dentes, dentículos e espinhos caudais em jazidas do Aquitaniano ao Placenciano (23 Ma a 2.6 Ma). Foram identificadas e estudadas cerca de 105 jazidas no continente e na Ilha de Santa Maria, a maioria das quais desapareceu ou está atualmente inacessível. Até ao momento, deram à estampa noventa e uma espécies de tubarões e raias, onze das quais descritas pela primeira vez em Portugal.Portugal has a rich fossil record. For decades, researchers have found thousands of fossils and identified hundreds of species from major taxonomic groups. This small note refers to the scientific literature on fossils of cartilaginous fish, collected from fossiliferous deposits of the Neogene Portuguese. Fossils of sharks and rays, teeth, dermal denticles, and caudal spines were discovered in deposits from Aquitanian to Placencian (Neogene). About 105 deposits were identified and studied on the mainland and on the Island of Santa Maria, most of which have disappeared or are currently inaccessible. 91 species of Chondrichthyes, 11 of which were described for the first time in Portugal.
