The Landes arenas: local lives and identities in the 20th century Bullfighting culture is an ancestral practice that remains present in the Landes department. In the 20th century, this department in the southwest of France saw permanent bullrings appear across the region in large numbers. These structures became prominent gathering places for local festivities associated with the local form of bullfighting: the "course landaise." The bullrings and the associated rural and popular practices took on a significant role in the daily lives of the Landes inhabitants and became powerful symbols shaping the identity of the region and its people. In the 21st century, a process of heritage recognition was initiated to acknowledge the cultural and historical value of these buildings, constructed solely for bullfighting practices. The Landes arenas: local lives and identities in the 20th century Bullfighting culture is an ancestral practice that remains present in the Landes department.
