Abstract

This essay, surrounded in the project "RED - School Performance and Development", funded by FCT, aimed at characterizing the attitudes of 9th grade students at a school of Alentejo in relation to the subjects of Portuguese, Mathematics and Physics and Chemistry. We sought to identify relationships between those attitudes and school performance and detect possible differences between boys and girls regarding their perception about the adequacy of those subjects to a given gender. The data collection for the study resulted from the application of three questionnaires about attitudes towards, the subjects considered, developed in the context of RED. With the results we found that students showed quite different attitudes, varying with subjects, with gender and with attitudinal dimension considered (pleasure, ease, utility and discomfort). All these factors seem to influence school performance. No differences were detected regarding the perception about the appropriateness of the subjects to a given gender.
