Abstract

The Courses to Psicoprophylactic Preparation for the Birth (PPB) are not limited to the prevention of pain in childbirth. They have other purposes: to reduce anxiety; to control stress; to promote self-esteem and satisfaction and to promote feelings of ability and postpartum adjustment. Objectives: 1) to reflect on the pedagogical conception of the course to preparation for birth; 2) to know the relationship of PPB with maternal/newborn (NB) benefits. Methodology: cross-sectional, quantitative and descriptive study. Convenience sample with 385 recent mothers. The results obtained show significant differences between the groups of women who performed PPB and those which did not, emphasizing differences in the progress of labor and delivery type, satisfaction with childbirth and pain management and also in the Apgar score of the NB. Conclusion: the organization of classes and the content is determined by the philosophy or purpose of the group. The findings of this study demonstrate the existence of several advantages/benefits of Preparation for Birth, by the Psicoprophylactic method.
