Abstract
Here we make an exhaustive review of the literature regarding the territorial connection of sustainable agri-food systems. This
connection must be seen in a holistic manner and impacts directly food sovereignty. We base this systematic literature review
on bibliometric methods allowing us to highlight a set of descriptive findings that clearly enlighten the reader on the most im-
pactful authors, papers, journals, affiliations, and countries. Trends of words and topics gaining (and losing) importance are
also highlighted by the conceptual significance they represent. Beyond these bibliometric descriptions, cluster organization
and further content analysis are provided. Three theoretical approaches are identified, revealing specializations in this research,
either by a different geographical focus (developing versus western world) or a different social-territorial approach (transfor-
mation of the food system and societal values versus transitioning to more sustainable farming practices). We found this
review to be much needed since the large bulk of research has been done very recently and some contradictions are visible,
therefore we expect this paper helps to surpass those. This issue is on top of political agendas and a clear scientific unders-
tanding of its implications is essential in order to make the best possible decisions.
