Sociedades e Elites no Concelho de Évora - Permanência e Mudança (1890-1930)

Abstract

A presente investigação tem como âmbito de estudo o perfil de estratificação social do concelho de Évora e a composição e acção pública da sua elite municipal, entre 1890 e 1930. Analisa-se o perfil de estratificação social do concelho de Évora, captando os seus traços de persistência e de mudança, e perscruta-se a actuação da elite municipal eborense, atendendo ao seu papel no processo de modernização da sociedade local. Incidimos sobretudo na vertente material do processo de estratificação, embora recorramos também a outro tipo de indicadores de desigualdade como sejam os relativos ao status ou relacionados com os mecanismos de acesso ao poder. Pretende-se, a partir do caso de Évora, contribuir para um melhor conhecimento da História social e política do Portugal contemporâneo, em grande medida ainda por fazer, e que terá de passar por levantamentos assentes em fontes primárias e por uma cuidada atenção às especificidades locais e regionais. ABSTRACT - The aim of this research is to study the stratification of society in the district (concelho) of Évora and the composition and public action of its municipal elite from 1890 to 1930. Our examination of the social stratification profile of the district focuses on aspects of change and permanence, and our survey of the action of the local municipal elite highlights its role in the process of the modernization of local society. In our analysis of the stratification process, we focus on indicators of inequality: not only those of a material nature but also others associated with status and mechanisms used to access power. The intention is to provide a contribution towards a greater understanding of the contemporary social and political history of Portugal, an area in which little work has hitherto been carried out. Our investigation is founded on a case study of Évora and is based on primary sources, close attention being paid to local and regional specificities.
