A tradução de A Brief Grammar of the Portuguese Language, de John C. Branner

Abstract

O Trabalho de Projecto que se apresenta centra-se na tradução para a língua portuguesa de A Brief Grammar of the Portuguese Language, de John Casper Branner (1910, New York). Constituindo-se como um trabalho inovador e pioneiro, em virtude de esta ser a primeira tradução de uma gramática de Português como Língua Estrangeira (PLE), escrita em inglês, datada do início do século XX, a tradução realizada visa contribuir não só para o conhecimento do ensino de línguas estrangeiras, como também para o conhecimento de fases anteriores da língua portuguesa, no âmbito do Projecto de Investigação Para a História da Gramática e do Ensino do Português como Língua Estrangeira (séculos XVII-XX) actualmente a ser desenvolvido no Centro de Estudos em Letras (CEL) das Universidades de Évora e de Trás-os- Montes e Alto Douro; ABSTRACT: The present Project work consisted in the translation to Portuguese of A Brief Grammar of the Portuguese Language, by John Casper Branner (1910, New York). This is an innovative and ground-breaking Project Work since it is the first translation of a grammar of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL), written in English and dated from tthe early 1900’s. The translation of this grammar aims to contribute not only to the dissemination of knowledge about the teaching of foreign languages, but also to a better understanding of former stages of the Portuguese language, within the framework of the research project Para a História da Gramática e do Ensino do Português como Língua Estrangeira (séculos XVII-XX) (the history of grammar and the teaching of Portuguese as a Foreign Language since the 17th century and up to the 20th century) which is being developed at the Centro de Estudos em Letras/ CELUÉ (Centre for Language Studies) of the Universities of Évora and of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro.
