The development of hydrogeology with respect to hard-rock and fractured-rock aquifers is described. The differences between porous aquifers and karst are explained, as well as the groundwater flow regimes in the different fractured rocks. A position is taken on numerical modeling, from the beginning of modeling to the present day, with focus on particular challenges. Because of the importance of fractured-rock aquifers, the tools for groundwater exploration and future resource management are mentioned. The essay introduces a topical collection of articles.por
