The crisis of modern philosophical spatiality and new configurations of the concept of space - Marcello Boemio This thesis explores the concept of modern political space, in its specific differentiation from the conception of ancient and pre-modern space, analyzing its birth with Hobbes and its evolution through scientific and philosophical thought up to the contemporary period. The starting point for the construction of the new idea of space is represented by Galileo Galilei's work and Hobbes' idea of an ordered geometric and political space, embodied by the Leviathan, where sovereign power guarantees stability against natural chaos, in the name of a cartographic rationality that replaces the world with the map. With Newton, space acquires a universal and mathematical dimension, governed by physical laws that also influence political thought, introducing the idea of a rational and universal order that attempts to bring man and nature closer together. The French Revolution and the concept of the nation elaborated by Sieyès represent another fundamental step, where political power becomes immanent to the people, establishing an autonomous political space. The metric system, with Delambre and Méchain, exemplifies the desire to rationalize physical space as well, making it measurable and governable. In the 20th century, the crisis of this model emerges both in literature, with Kafka and Eliot, and in philosophy, which searches for new forms of spatiality without definitively finding them, following the decline of the European-based spatiality. While literary texts represent a fragmented and alienating space, philosophy reflects on the dissolution of a political and spatial order previously considered stable. The thesis concludes by investigating the contemporary difficulty of defining a coherent political space, a sign of a crisis that permeates both literature and philosophical thought in the ongoing search for a new spatiality that has yet to emerge.por
