Abstract
Abstract:
This study analyzed the interaction between the temperature and humidity index (THI; bioclimatic indicator) and the pregnancy rate, an important reproductive parameter for assessing the fertility of a dairy farm. The study took place in 2023, on a farm with Holstein-Friesian cows on Terceira Island. It aims to analyze the effect of heat stress (ST) by compared the pregnancy rate between the summer and winter months, and by evaluating whether the negative pregnancy diagnoses in the 2023 summer showed any association with the existence of high THI values (THI >72) at the time of final maturation of the oocyte, fertilization and the start of embryogenesis up to the morula stage. In this study, although thermal discomfort was identifiedin the summer (9,3% THI >72), this did not significantly affect the pregnancy rate (p
>0.05).
