Protecting the unbuilt: between tangible and intangible heritage

Abstract

This article examines the patrimonialisation and classification process of the Malagueira neighbourhood, designed by Álvaro Siza, emphasizing both its tangible and intangible values. The classification of Malagueira is challenging due to its unfinished state and the intangible aspects of Siza’s concepts and participatory processes. While the principles of the Venice Charter are embedded in Portuguese law, they traditionally focus on stone monuments, with recent shifts towards modern heritage, including twentieth-century architecture. Incorporating Siza’s unfinished buildings and equipment into the classification is complex. While tangible structures are easy to reference, the evolving nature of the site makes incorporating intangible aspects challenging. The conclusion of the MALAGUEI-RA.PT research project and classification process revealed operational issues, prompting us to assist the responsible entities. Balancing protective measures with the site’s adaptability is crucial to ensuring the community’s ongoing evolution and transmission across generations.
