Relação entre o uso problemático da internet, autoestima e comportamentos suicidários em jovens universitários

Abstract

A Internet é uma ferramenta essencial de trabalho, relacional e de lazer. Contudo, com a generalização e intensificação da sua utilização tem-se verificado com maior frequência um uso problemático da mesma, sobretudo pelos mais jovens. O uso problemático da Internet (UPI) parece estar associado a determinadas características do sujeito, como a autoestima e a existência de perturbações mentais. Este estudo tem por objectivo analisar a relação entre o UPI, a autoestima e os comportamentos suicidários. A uma amostra de 382 jovens com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e os 25 anos, foi administrado um questionário sociodemográfico, a Escala de Uso Generalizado Problemático da Internet, a Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg e o Questionário de Comportamentos Suicidários Revisto. Os resultados revelam uma relação entre o UPI e os comportamentos suicidários, a existência de um efeito moderador da autoestima na relação entre o UPI e os comportamentos suicidários e ainda a existência de diferenças entre algumas variáveis sociodemográficas e clínicas no que toca ao UPI, à autoestima e aos comportamentos suicidários; Relationship between Problematic Use of Internet, Self-Esteem and Suicidal Behaviors in Young University Students Abstract: The Internet is a crucial resource for work, relational and leisure purposes. Although, along with its broadening and intensification, it has been acknowledged to be used in a problematic way more often specially among young people. The Problematic Internet Use (PIU) seems to be associated with some individual traits, such as the selfesteem and mental disturbance. This research aims to analyze the relationship between the PIU, self-esteem and suicidal behaviors. A sociodemographic survey was applied to a sample of 382 young people between 18 and 25 years old, including the Generalized Internet Use Scale, the Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale and the Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire - Revised. The results highlight a relationship between the PIU and the suicidal behaviors, a moderation effect of the self-esteem in the relationship between PIU and the suicidal behaviors and some differences on sociodemographic and clinical variables regarding the PIU, self-esteem and suicidal behaviors.
