Incansável ao serviço da sua pátria, lutou desde muito jovem para conseguir modernizá-la, mas pouco apreciado pelos senhores do seu tempo, acabou desterrado e incompreendido em todas as suas tentativas; ### Abstract: The Marquis of Pombal and Jovellanos: Two Iberian Ministers The study of the two illustrious representatives – Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo and Baltazar Gaspar Melchor of Jovellanos, leaders in their respective counties during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries – had as an objective to understand the reason why they were rejected, misunderstood and even insulted by their country. The first established the country´s economy, approaching it to economic and social reality of Europe, it had been decadent since the reign of D.João IV. It was a statesman admired by noble attitudes that turned the nation strong again, with this intention it started with various reforms. However, he turned into a “ illuminated despot” confirming himself as the only supreme, man of power and honesty, with this he became hated by his people. The second, held a thought of innovation, enviable for that time. Tireless of serving for his country, he fought from a very young age to try to modernize it, but unappreciated by the men of this time, he ended up banished and misunderstood in all his attempts. | por |
