A família de Heitor Mendes de Brito: um percurso ascendente

Abstract

RESUMO: Traça-se o itinerário ascendente de Heitor Mendes de Brito, o Rico, que faleceu em Lisboa em 1622. Acompanha-se o processo de mobilidade social da família até ao início do século XVIII. Neste itinerário salienta-se: 1) o modo como usaram o poder de emprestar à Coroa para obter capital social, incluindo hábitos das Ordens Militares; 2) a conivência da Coroa nas negociações com o Papado, tendo em vista obter breves de dispensa do sangue cristão-novo; 3) o modo como várias gerações desta parentela lidaram com a fama de impureza de sangue. ABSTRACT: The text analyses the ascending itinerary of the Lisbon merchant Heitor Mendes de Brito, the Rich, who died in this city in 1622. The process of social mobility of the family is studied until the beginning of the eighteenth century. In this itinerary we highlight: 1) how they used the power to lend money to the Portuguese Crown to obtain social capital, including habits of the Military Orders; 2) the connivance of the Crown in the negotiations with the Papacy, to achieve dispensations of the new-Christian blood; 3) the way in which several generations of this family dealt with the fame of blood impurity.
