Sistema monástico-conventual e desenvolvimento urbano de Évora na baixa idade média

Abstract

A cidade de Évora deve parte da sua forma urbana à localização dos inúmeros mosteiros e conventos, construídos ao longo dos séculos, e à influência evidenciada pela população religiosa neles residente. O facto de Évora se situar num importante cruzamento de vias e ser uma região de comércio próspero e rodeada por campos de singular fertilidade justificou, em parte, a importância e o número de casas religiosas, que aqui foram fundadas. O papa Clemente IV, no século XIII, com a regulamentação que impôs de distâncias mínimas entre novas fundações conventuais, “obrigou” que tais conjuntos religiosos se dispersassem pelas cidades. Planeou, assim, involuntariamente, pontos de interesse notáveis que no caso de Évora cobrem na íntegra todo o tecido urbano amuralhado. O riquíssimo e diversificado património imóvel daí resultante confere hoje à cidade eborense um carisma único, sedimentado ao longo dos séculos; ### ABSTRACT:The city of Évora owes its urban disposition to the location of the innumerable monasteries and convents built throughout the centuries and the influence of the clerical occupants of those dwellings. Due to the fact that Évora was situated in an important crossroads, a region of prosperous commerce and surrounded by extremely fertile areas, the number and importance of religious houses which were funded here over the time were partly justified. The Pope Clement IV, in the 13th century, created rules which imposed a minimum distance between new conventual foundations installations making the dispersion of those buildings mandatory throughout the cities. Thus, involuntarily, planning important sites of interest, which in Évora cover entirely the fortified urban area. The extremely rich and diverse resultant patrimony provides the city with unique and bewitching traits, originated by centuries of religious power.
