Património industrial e usos contemporâneos: o caso de Arquipélago - Centro de Artes Contemprâneas

Abstract

Antigos edifícios e estruturas industriais que o tempo tornou obsoletos têm vindo a ser reconhecidos, progressivamente, pelo carácter particular da sua arquitectura, pelas qualidades espaciais que possuem e pela importância da sua manutenção para a salvaguarda da memória colectiva. De um modo geral, estas construções têm o potencial de poderem albergar novos usos e programas, de carácter muito diferenciado, como resposta às necessidades da vida contemporânea. Neste âmbito interessa-nos a reflexão sobre os processos de transformação e adaptação realizados sobre este tipo de edifícios, os quais permitem a sua salvaguarda e potenciam a sua reintegração na cidade e no território contemporâneos. A investigação começa por uma abordagem à área de estudo do património industrial, com um enfoque particular sobre o contexto português. Neste âmbito são considerados alguns casos práticos que foram sujeitos a processos de transformação e adaptação a novos usos, tanto no contexto nacional como no internacional. Seguidamente a investigação conflui na análise da obra Arquipélago - Centro de Artes Contemporâneas, cujo projecto foi realizado em parceria entre os ateliers Menos é Mais Arquitectos e João Mendes Ribeiro Arquitecto. Neste âmbito é realizada uma abordagem ao antigo conjunto fabril e contexto envolvente, seguida do desenvolvimento da análise e da interpretação da intervenção realizada com a sua adaptação a um novo uso. ABSTRACT: Old industrial buildings and structures that time made obsolete have been progressively acknowledged by the nature of its architecture, the spatial qualities it possesses and by the importance of its maintenance for the safeguarding of collective memory. Generally, these buildings have the potential to shelter new uses and functions, of differentiated nature, as an answer to the needs of the contemporary life. ln this context, we are interested on the reflexion of the processes of transformation and adaptation carried out on this type of buildings, which allow their safeguard and enhance their reintegration imo the contemporary city and territory. The research begins with an approach to the field of study of industrial heritage, with a particular focus on the Portuguese context. Here are considered some practical cases that have undergone processes of transformation and adaptation to new uses, both in the national context and in the international context. Then the investigation merges imo the analysis of the project Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre, whose project was carried out by a partnership between Menos é Mais Arquitectos e João Mendes Ribeiro Arquitecto. ln this context an approach to the old factory and its setting is carried out, followed by the development of the analysis and interpretation of the intervention performed with its adaption to a new use.
