As Sociedades Agrícolas Distritais e a Construção do Estado Liberal no Portugal de Oitocentos

Abstract

A vitalidade do movimento associativo tem sido interpretada como um indicador da maior ou menor capacidade de afirmação dos regimes liberais e das suas elites políticas, culturais e económicas, ao longo do século XIX. Nos países onde a modernização e a diferenciação social foram relativamente mais lentas e tardias, as mesmas elites apontavam a incipiência da dinâmica associativa e defendiam as múltiplas vantagens da associação para o progresso das nações. O presente estudo situa as sociedades agrícolas de oitocentos no âmbito das diagnoses para o progresso do país e avalia o seu papel no processo de estruturação do Estado liberal em Portugal. The vitality of the associative movement has been interpreted as an indicator of the greater or lesser capacity of the liberal regimes and their 19th century political, cultural and economic elites to affirm themselves. In countries where modernization and social differentiation were relatively slower and later, the same elites referred to the incipient associative dynamics and defended the multiple advantages of association for the progress of nations. The present paper studies the Portuguese agricultural societies of the century in the context of the diagnoses for the progress of the country and evaluates their role in the process of structuring the liberal state in Portugal.
