Afinidades Electivas: História e Historiografia na Construção da Identidade Artística Portuguesa

Abstract

Pretende-se demonstrar que a identidade artística portuguesa é, tal como se apresenta, uma construção da narrativa historiográfica, que se sobrepõe às razões ideológicas e culturais conjunturais de cada época. A natureza dessa narrativa historiográfica conduziu à detecção de padrões formais, definidores de realidades artísticas de coerência interna, que criam identidade pelo contraste pelas outras realidades que lhe são exteriores, nacionais ou internacionais. Verificaremos este fenómeno na criação dos estilos manuelino e românico, na arquitectura pombalina ou no conceito da Casa Portuguesa, na Escola Portuguesa de Pintura ou no Jardim Português.

We intend to demonstrate that Portuguese artistic identity is, as it stands, a construction of the historiography narrative, which offsets to the ideological and cultural conjuncture of each time. The nature of this historiography narrative led to the discovery of formal standards, defining artistic realities with internal consistency that create identity by contrast with other external, national or international realities. We will verify this phenomenon in the creation of Manueline and Romanesque styles, in the Pombaline architecture or in the concept of Casa Portuguesa (Portuguese House), in the Portuguese School of Painting or in the Portuguese Garden.
