Abstract

Air pollution is a serious environmental problem, causing adverse e ects such as respiratory disorders, allergies and, in more serious situations, degenerative lesions in the nervous system and vital organs, especially in children and the elderly. In most polluted cities, such disturbances become worse in winter with the usual low temperatures and high humidity level. Generalized linear models and generalized additive models in a Bayesian framework are employed to model the e ect on the number of weekly admitted children in the pediatric emergency department of the Barreiro Hospital with respiratory problems. That is accomplished from data on levels of pollutants and meteorological variables.
