O romance matrimonial: a representação do casamento na obra de Júlio Dinis

Abstract

Na presente tese, pretendemos analisar a temática da constituição do casamento nos romances do escritor português Júlio Dinis (1839-1871), publicados, em primeiras edições, entre 1867 e 1871. Ao contrário da maioria das obras dos autores do século XIX, que representam o amor não realizável, impossível e arrebatador, a obra romanesca dinisiana representa o paradigma do amor verdadeiro, consubstanciado na união conjugal, contribuindo, deste modo, para a caracterização do romance matrimonial. Reproduzindo o quotidiano, as práticas comuns, os modos e os costumes da época oitocentista em Portugal, quer no espaço campestre, quer no espaço citadino, a obra romanesca de Júlio Dinis expressa as relações pessoais e sociais, os significados e os valores do país, representando, simultaneamente, o caráter e o padrão social e cultural português durante o período da Regeneração. Efetivamente, é nosso intuito demonstrar que a avaliação, muitas vezes recorrente, que considera esta obra ligeira e bondosa, não se justifica, porquanto estamos em presença de romances com evidente valor literário, refletindo características românticas e outras realistas, tornando-se, assim, uma obra singular no panorama da literatura portuguesa; Abstract:  The matrimonial novel – The representation of marriage in the work of Júlio Dinis In this dissertation, we aim at analyzing the theme of marriage in the novels of the Portuguese writer Júlio Dinis (1839-1871), first published, in first editions, between 1867 and 1871. Unlike most of the works of nineteenth-century writers, representing unattainable, impossible and impetuous love, the novels of Dinis represent true love, consubstantiated in the conjugal union, thus contributing to the characterization of the novel of marriage. Reproducing the everyday, common practices, the ways and the customs of the nineteenth-century times in Portugal, both in the countryside and in the city, the novels of Júlio Dinis express the personal and social relationships, the meanings and the values of the country while representing, simultaneously, the character and the Portuguese social and cultural patterns of the Regeneration period. Indeed, it is our intention to demonstrate that the often recurrent judgment, which considers these novels mild and kind, is not justified, because they do have obvious literary value, some reflecting romantic characteristics and others realistic characteristics, becoming thus a singular work in the Portuguese literary panorama.
