Abstract
The present study has as its aim the variation in the realization of the liquid
consonants /l/ and /ɾ/ in coda in Barranquenho (a typical case of linguistic contact, between southern Portuguese and Extremadura/Andalusia Castilian) spoken in the small Portuguese border town of Barrancos. The analysis is based on the materials of the Linguistic-Ethnographic Atlas of Portugal and Galicia (ALEPG), collected in this locality. For statistical purposes, we use as our corpus the transcription of the answers to the questionnaire (2000 questions) of the aforementioned project. From the analysis
carried out, which complements the one carried out by Navas (2011, 2017) on the behaviour of sibilants in coda – thus covering all the consonants that occur in this position – it is possible to conclude that, like sibilants, liquid consonants also show an accentuated tendency to weakening or suppression in absolute final.
