Sociedade e mobilidade social no Algarve rural Oitocentista: a Freguesia de Martim Longo (Alcoutim),1800-1910

Abstract

O presente estudo tem como principal objetivo a História da estrutura e a dinâmica social de uma freguesia rural portuguesa durante o «longo» Século XIX. Com base nos róis de confessados, procede-se a uma análise da evolução da estrutura familiar, da configuração e da mobilidade sociais da freguesia rural de Martim Longo, concelho de Alcoutim, na Serra Algarvia. Usando quadros de referência e classificação social comuns, é nosso especial propósito a comparação explícita com os resultados obtidos por outras investigações de âmbito regional e nacional e integrar este estudo de caso na agenda internacional da História Comparada da Mobilidade Social na Europa. A análise da mobilidade social intra- e inter-geracional mostra como nos meios rurais, as oportunidades individuais e intergeracionais de mudança de posição social eram escassas, sendo a tendência dominante a «imobilidade» intra e intergeracioal, simplificando os processos de estruturação social.##Society and Social Mobility in the Rural nineteenth century Algarve The parish of Martim Longo (Alcoutim) - (1800-1910) The present study’s main objective is the history of the social structure and dynamics of a rural portuguese parish along the "long" nineteenth century. Based on ancient documents, the evolution of the family structure, the social configuration and mobility of a rural parish (on the Algarve’s mountains), the parish of Martim Longo, Alcoutim is analyzed. Using reference charts and common social classification, it is our purpose to compare the results obtained by other investigations of the regional and national level and integrate the study of the Portuguese case on the international agenda of the Comparative History of Social Mobility in Europe. The analysis of the intragenerational and intergenerational social mobility shows how, in the rural areas, the individual and intergenerational opportunities of changing their social position were scarce, the dominant tendency being the “immobility” intra and intergenerational, simplifying the social structuring processes.
