Abstract
The present study focuses on José Sócrates’ discourse given on several occasions when he was still the prime-minister of Portugal and after his term of office: interviews granted to the television stations RTP1 and SIC , as well as to the weekly newspaper Expresso, in 2011, 2013 and 2014.
The study aimed at highlighting not only the images José Sócrates constructed both of and for Himself and for the Other – in this case, the journalists - but also the images that the Other wanted to reveal to the Others: the newspaper readers and the television viewers. To meet this end, the semiolinguistic analysis that was done of his words, grounded on the lexicometric data obtained from the hypertext programme Hyperbase, attempted to verify the coincidence or the dissidence of the representation of a Self, once a former political leader, whose construction, woven in several threads of both private and public memory, might have resulted from a deliberate choice to keep or gain recognition of his devotion to the Portuguese public cause.
