O comportamento estratégico das elites económicas alentejanas face à actividade industrial: algumas evidências a partir da região de Évora (1880-1926)

Abstract

Este texto questiona a natureza tradicionalista do comportamento económico das elites alentejanas. Para tal descreve o envolvimento das elites económicas da região de Évora na actividade industrial no período 1880-1926 a partir da análise das fontes fiscais. Embora essas fontes revelem a participação dos grandes negociantes e dos grandes terratenentes em interesses industriais na região, não é possível estabelecer uma relação directa entre o nível de fortuna e o grau de envolvimento nessa actividade. No essencial, esses interesses surgiram no prolongamento da actividade agrícola e do grande negócio especulador. O sector industrial é caracterizado como estando ainda dominado por relações pré-capitalistas e, nessa medida, estava longe de constituir um campo de investimento privilegiado para os grandes capitais. This text questions the traditional nature of the economic behaviour of Alentejo's elite (South of Portugal). In order to do so, it describes the involvement of the economic elite of Évora region in the industrial activity, during the period of 1880-1926, taking as starting point the analysis of the tax sources. Although these sources reveal the participation of the main traders and the great landowners in the regional industrial business, it is not possible to establish a direct relationship between their wealth and their involvement in that activity. Essentially, those business appeared as extensions of agriculture and land speculation. The industrial sector as a hole was still dominated by pre-capitalist relations and, in what this concerns, it was far from being an important field of investment for great capitalists.
