Abstract

This is the translation of a text by Jean-Michel Carrié originally entitled "Aspects de l'architecture militaire à partir du quatrième siècle après JC". This text has a double interest: on the one hand it deepens the knowledge on military aspects of the fourth century AD, with special emphasis given to the evolution that took place in the types of military camp, to the constitution of the armies and payment of the soldiers; on the other hand, calls into question some methodological processes used to find interpretive solutions. The author highlights the fourth century as a period of remarkable theoretical and systematic formulations, critically addressing many aspects that continue to raise questions.

Apresenta-se a tradução do texto que, originalmente, se intitula "Aspects de l'architecture militaire à partir du quatrième siècle après JC.", de Jean-Michel Carrié. O texto tem duplo interesse: por um lado aprofunda o conhecimento sobre aspectos militares do século IV d.C., com especial destaque dado à evolução que teve lugar nos tipos de acampamento, à constituição dos exércitos e pagamento dos soldados; por outro, põe em questão alguns processos metodológicos usados para encontrar soluções interpretativas. O autor evidencia o século IV como um período de notáveis formulações teóricas e sistemáticas, abordando criticamente muitos aspectos que continuam a suscitar interrogações.
