A intervenção dos engenheiros e condutores de obras na modernização da Cidade de Évora (1880-1920)

Abstract

Através de uma perspectiva centrada no clima de desenvolvimento conhecido pela sociedade europeia a partir do século XVIII, com particular destaque para o embelezamento e modernização das cidades, procuro estudar de que forma a cidade de Évora, um centro urbano de média dimensão dum país periférico, situada numa região de interior, também beneficiou desse contexto. Será também objecto da minha análise, a discussão teórica em torno do trabalho dos engenheiros e condutores de obras, intervenientes directos no processo de modernização dos centros urbanos oitocentistas, procurando identificar de que forma a sua intervenção, conhecimentos técnicos e experiência profissional contribuíram para a concretização de algumas obras públicas importantes para a cidade de Évora durante a segunda metade do século XIX e início do século XX. Pretendo ainda analisar de que forma essas obras se podem incluir, ou não, à sua escala, no espírito de progresso e modernidade transversal à maioria das cidades europeias. /***Abstract - Through a perspective centered in the climate of development known by the European society in the XVIII century, with a special emphasis in the embellishment and modernization of cities, I seek to study in which way the city of Évora, a medium sized urban centre of a peripheral country, situated in an inland region, also beneficiated from this context. It will also be an object of my analysis, the theoretical discussion about the work of engineers and work contractors directly intervening in the process of modernization of the eight hundredth century urban centers. I seek to identify in which way their intervention, technical expertise and professional experience, contributed to the implementation of important public works in the city of Évora, during the second half of the XIX century and beginning of the XX century. I also intend to analyse in which way these works may or may not be included, at their own scale, in the spirit of progress and modernity transversal to most European cities.
