A peregrinação humana para a Paz: uma imagem da conflitualidade dada por Agostinho e Orósio

Abstract

O pensamento augustineano contribuiu para a configuração medieval do poder político, ao separar o que era da ordem temporal do que era da ordem espiritual, dando a César o que pertencia a César e a Deus o que a Deus pertencia (Mat.XXII,21). A partir deste enquadramento retoma-se a leitura da Cidade de Deus, que começou a ser escrita em 413, atendendo à imagem dos dois amores (XIV) e à analogia do trigo e do joio (XXXV). O problema que nos interessa investigar, até pela sua ressonância na sociedade actual, é a relação entre cristãos e pagãos dentro da mesma comunidade. Há virtudes sociais a preservar na cidade dos homens? Qual o tipo de poder político regulador da cidade constituída por cristãos e pagãos? Augustinian thought contributed to the medieval configuration of political power, by separating what belonged to the temporal order from what belonged to the spiritual order, giving to Caesar what belonged to Caesar and to God what belonged to God (Matt. XXII, 21). From this framework, we resume the reading of the City of God, which began to be written in 413, paying attention to the image of the two loves (XIV) and the analogy of the wheat and the tares (XXXV). The problem we are interested in investigating, not least because of its resonance in present-day society, is the relationship between Christians and pagans within the same community. Are there social virtues to be preserved in the city of men? What kind of political power regulates the city made up of Christians and pagans?
