Histoire et technique de construction des pirogues vernaculaires du Sénégal

Abstract

Cette étude est faite sur l’architecture des pirogues vernaculaires de la Sénégambie est centré sur trois grandes parties essentielles. La première partie porte sur l’historiographie des embarcations, ce qui permet de comprendre la nature et les formes des premières pirogues navigant dans la région et construite sur place. En s’appuyant exclusivement sur des récits de voyages, des sources iconographiques et des travaux remarquables de Jean Pierre Chauveau, cette partie du projet met en lumière les savoirs faire endogène. Elle permet de remettre en question le regard euro-centrique porté sur l’histoire maritime africaine dont son existence fait encore l’objet d’un certain doute. A la suite de cette partie historique, le deuxième argument développé dans ce projet est celui de l’utilité des embarcations traditionnelles dans le quotidien des communautés. A ce titre, la pêche artisanale apparaît comme principale activité dans laquelle sont employées les pirogues. En abordant cette question, on constate que le succès des pirogues traditionnelles ne fait l’ombre d’aucun doute surtout qu’avec l’arrivée du moteur hors bord qui a beaucoup augmenté les performances des embarcations. En dépit de ce succès, le gouvernement s’engage à plusieurs reprises dans un processus de modernisation des embarcations vernaculaires. Le dernier chapitre de ce travail traite spécifiquement sur le remplacement des pirogues en bois initié depuis 1950 par le Projet des Ateliers et Chantiers Maritimes, suivi du projet Doris et tant d’autres. Toutes ces initiatives ont échoué et le dernier en date de 2014 suscite encore beaucoup de questions; Abstract: This study of the architecture of the vernacular canoes of Senegambia is centered on three main parts. The first part deals with the historiography of the boats, which allows us to understand the nature and forms of the first pirogues navigating in the region and built locally. Based exclusively on travel accounts, iconographic sources and the remarkable work of Jean Pierre Chauveau, this part of the project highlights the endogenous knowledge. It allows us to question the Euro-centric view of African maritime history, the existence of which is still subject to some doubt. Following this historical part, the second argument developed in this project is that of the usefulness of traditional boats in the daily life of communities. In this respect, artisanal fishing appears to be the main activity in which pirogues are employed. In addressing this issue, we note that the success of traditional pirogues is not in doubt, especially with the arrival of the outboard engine, which has greatly increased the performance of the boats. Despite this success, the government has repeatedly embarked on a process of modernization of vernacular boats. The last chapter of this work deals specifically with the replacement of wooden pirogues initiated since 1950 by the Ateliers et Chantiers Maritimes project, followed by the Doris project and many others. All these initiatives have failed and the latest one in 2014 still raises many questions.
