Abstract

The book "A renomeação do Brazil: a construção de uma identidade nacional pela ortografia" (“The renaming of Brazil: the construction of a national identity through spelling”) revisits the period of the Proclamation of the Republic and raises questions about the spelling of the name “Brasil” ~ “Brazil”. More than just a question of spelling, the reflections on this issue at the time reflected the search for a new national identity and the country’s insertion into the modern world. In addition to works in the field of history, the book’s theoretical foundation is marked by important works from the history of linguistic ideas and the social history of Brazilian portuguese.
